key codes and conventions of a short film form
Short film refers to any film not considered a feature film in terms of length. Although length is the most obvious characterisation of a short film, films of this type will share codes and conventions which separate them from other forms of video. Length - Short films are anywhere between 3 - 20 minutes. Anything that exceeds 40 minutes cannot be a short film.
Storyline - are generally kept simple and easy to follow. The narrative will usually be condensed, there will be time skips. Characters will develop through actions and images.
Characters - There are few characters in short films. Usually there will be between 1 and 3 main characters. As this again, makes it easier for the audience to follow, because its less confusing as lots of new characters aren't appearing in such a short amount of time. This also avoids having to create extra back story and character developments. However, this means the characters and their story needs to be captivating enough for it to hold a large audience's interest.
Twists - Since the short storylines gives less clues to the ending including twists are a common convention in short films. It allows filmmakers to tell a short story in an interesting way.
Creativity - Short films allows filmmakers to experiment and express their creativity while having less pressure about whether it will be profitable enough or not. Short films use a number of creative shots and soundtracks making it an artistic piece.
Budget - Short films usually have a low budget. Short films are mostly made by aspiring/first time filmmakers or experimental artists with little to no funding. This can make the film look 'homemade'. However, there are exceptions to this, some on a low budget looks near professional. And others have a large budget to spend.
Niche audience - short films typically have a small audience, it is hard to hit the mainstream audience due to the creative nature, length and simple storyline. A lot of people still don't know about short films even though it is so easily accessible. Short films reach a much more specific audience.
