Short film refers to any film not considered a feature film in terms of length. Although length is the most obvious characterisation of a short film, films of this type will share codes and conventions which separate them from other forms of video. Length - Short films are anywhere between 3 - 20 minutes. Anything that exceeds 40 minutes cannot be a short film.  Storyline - are generally kept simple and easy to follow. The narrative will usually be condensed, there will be time skips. Characters will develop through actions and images.  Characters - There are few characters in short films. Usually there will be between 1 and 3 main characters. As this again, makes it easier for the audience to follow, because its less confusing as lots of new characters aren't appearing in such a short amount of time. A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. It should not exceed 30 minutes.  Short films are created to tell a concentrated piece of story  at a significantly lower cost than a full length feature film. The storyline will still get across to th e audience despite it being shorter than a normal film, as the storyline will most of the time be straightforward. And since it is shorter it will be less costly, because it requires less shots, locations, editing, and overall time.  A short film is good at telling a compelling story, the best short films have a clear, concise and often a very simple premise. Which is necessary since it is so short. It helps to set a specific goal to the main character. E.g. in CGI's animated short film "One Small Step" the girls dream is to become an astronaut.
